Matthew's Background

Hi! I’m Matthew Nielson, the head of the Gender Development lab. I am a lecturer in the Psychology Department at University of Exeter and I study gender identity development across the lifespan. I focus on the socialization of pressure to conform to gender norms, the outcomes of acquiescing to or rebelling against this pressure, and how these processes might change over time. When not working on school things I am generally cooking, running, or reading novels (tell me your book recommendations)!

Amelie's Background

Hi! I’m Amelie Lewis, an undergraduate research assistant. As a second year Psychology with Sport and Exercise Science student, I am interested in research across both these disciplines. In particular, I am drawn to the study and application of psychological tools that can be used to enhance athletic performance and motor learning. In Psychology, the influence of the social world on individual processes has always been of interest to me, including the role of social pressures on gender conformity through ageing, which has drawn me to the Gender Development lab. I am particularly interested in the role of the menopause in shaping gender identity.
